Social Justice and Equity
Essential Questions:
Throughout our unit students will learn about social justice and equity in the following ways:
- Who are immigrants?
- Can immigrants become members of their new communities while still retaining their sense of self and culture?
- What struggles do immigrants face?
- How have immigrants contributed to American culture and society?
Throughout our unit students will learn about social justice and equity in the following ways:
- By reading texts by author's from the American immigrant community; and learning about their lives and struggles through engagement and discussion of the texts in Mrs. Bever's class.
- By analyzing primary source documents about immigration into the U.S. focusing on the issues of discrimination, assimilation, and living conditions for immigrant communities.
- Students will spread word about some of the major issues going on in the immigrant community by creating a short 5 minute Public Service Announcement (PSA) video and posting it on You Tube.
- Students will get active and provide some aid to those in need right in their own town! Students will research and choose a local charity or aid organization to support. Then they will design, plan, and organize their own action plan to provide support to their chosen local charity or organization. For example students know from their research in Mr.Jensen's class and from the discussions in Ms. Bevers class that homelessness is one of the major issues in the immigrant community today. So their group may decide to provide aid to a local homeless shelter by planning and organizing a clothing or food drive on campus.
